Is really the world going fairer, more democratic ?

Addressing the participants of the Primakov Reading in Moscow, Putin stated that winds of change is being underway in International relations as the world became fairer, more democratic and oriented towards multipolarity. We have to understand by the meaning of fairer, more democratic and multipolarity uttered by Russian president. By observing closely the current state of world, one can say without contradicting himself that global capitalism, that is big corporations and multinationals continue to rule the entire globe, by imposing their propre agenda on the states, on the politicians and their controlled media. So, till now, no new under the sun. When Putin said that fairer, more democratic and multipolarity, he is probably thinking about the BRICS, demographic weight of its members, mainly China and India which both represent nearly more than 20% of world populations, and 37% of global GDP. The BRICS members states have neither the intention nor the force to change the international relations as its members are looking only to increase their cake-sharing and to divide the pie with the United States and Europe. The BRICS is not at all a political organization able to propose alternative to the western system of rules-based order. The BRICS members states continue to actively participate in the political and economic international institutions created by the Accords of Bretton Woods in 1944 committed to work inside the United Nations organization, a mere tool of the West used as convenient cover to fight regimes refusing to keel and to obey the orders emanating the United States and its European proxies. Two examples can show that Putin’s excessive optimism for fairer, more democratic world and multilateralism is not correct and is not appropriate this time. After the launch of Russian military special operation, February 24, 2022, the BRICS member states have ambiguous posture and they didn’t take clear position by fully supporting and even by military means, one of its members, against NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine. While the collective West operated harshly against Russia by imposing more than 19000 sanctions against Russia, instrumentalizing regional and international organizations in support for Kiev nazi regime and even pushing the International criminal Court to issue international warrant against Vladimir Putin for being “kidnaping” Ukrainian children while the aim of Russian intervention was to save Donbass civilian populations targeted and murdered by Kiev regime since 2014. Second example, following Hamas’s surprise attack, the collective west gave carte blanche, free hand to its protected colony in the Middle east to exterminate with total impunity the civilian populations of the Gaza Strip and to destroy its civilian infrastructure. The BRICS member states seem to be powerless to oppose Israeli war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity and to use regional and international organizations for action against Israeli genocidal regime and by the way requesting the International justice to try Israeli war criminals and to hold accountable its western backers as accomplices.

BRICS for what purpose ?

Since the end of the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, veteran and renowned analysts and academics are gloating about expanded BRICS presented as something announcing the dawn of so called new era symbolized by a new currency alternative to US dollar and to financial and economic institutions created by the Bretton Woods agreements in 1944. The question that begs : is the BRICS a really original organization grouping members from the global south, different from other transnational organizations such for example, the group of twenty, called G20 that will take place in new Delhi, India, on September 9 and 10, or from the Group of seven, called the G7 ?  The original acronym « BRIC », or « the BRICs », was coined in 2001 by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill who predicted that countries of the global south like India and Brazil would emerge as key players on the global economy by 2050. The main purpose of the BRICS was to look at investment opportunities. The historical context of its emergence in 2009 was a response to 2008 financial crisis, similar context that triggered the birth of the Group of Twenty in the wake of Asian financial crisis in 1997-98 or the Group of Seven triggered by the oil crisis of 1973 in the wake of the Israeli Arab war. By looking closely to these three transnational organizations, one can discover behind their emergence, chronical, recurrent and uncurable capitalist crisis. Main objective of the BRICS like the G20 and G7, is the research of an antidote to endless crisis of capitalist system and fitting mainly the economies of the global south into global capitalist market

The so called new dawn inaugurated by the BRICS

Since the end of the 15 BRICS’ summit in Johannesburg, renowned and veteran political and geopolitical analysts like Pepe Escobar, among others, or simple commentators are gloating predicting the dawn of new era and the birth of a multipolar world emancipated from western political and economic domination that lasted more than 500 years thanks to the enlargement of this global south organization, the BRICS. But make no mistake and we should not be fooled by BRICS propagandists who try to make believe that from now on, a new pattern in International relationships in general and economic relationships in particular will emerge differently from what it was before BRICS expansion. For one simple reason, the member states of the current BRICS and expanded template from January 1, 2024 are members of the World Trade organization and they are not willing to change its regulations related to International trade. BRICS member states could be able to establish new currency and Bank of development to finance new projects but they should comply with other regulations and recommendations imposed by the WTO. we have as example of Argentina, even being a BRICS member, must abide to International monetary fund(IMF) which imposed to Macri’s government reforms in economic and financial structures. Before the BRICS, alongside the Non Aligned movement, whose member states were trying not to side neither with the USA nor with the USSR, the countries from Third world grouping in what it is called the group of 77 (created in 1963 and still existing today) have created in the framework of the United Nations, the U N C T A D(United Nations for Commerce, trade and Development) an organization aimed at enhancing mutual economic and commercial ties between its members. But the heavy legacy of western colonialism and US imperialism have prevented the economic and political development of the members of group 77. The only critical period for creation of multipolar world was the emergence of the USSR as counterweight to capitalist international order. The only critical moment in modern history to create independent and autonomous economic and political entity not enslaving by capitalist collective west was the COMECON ( Council for Mutual Economic Assistance) created in 1949 grouping the USSR,Albania,East Germany,Poland,Hungary,Bulgaria,Roumania,Tchecoslovaquia, Mongolia, Cuba and Vietnam. The Comecon was dissolved in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR

Glimpse on the BRICS

Very informative post giving a glimpse on the BRICS in general and the consequences of its expansion. Contrary to western propaganda and hype on the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, this global south does  represent a real danger neither for global capitalism which continues its own path as usual thanks to US financial and economic institutions set up in Bretton Woods in 1944 and its corollary the dollar supremacy in commercial relationships between the global south and the global north, nor real threat to endless wars waged by US and its European vassals as one can observe today in African continent as the former colonizers have always their puppet regimes playing the role of western gendarme. That can be confirmed by this remark of the author “ It is important to understand that BRICS does not want to reverse globalization or take over the global economic order. In some ways, it even wants to preserve the existing order more than the US does

Having said that, the only very consequence of the BRICS enlargement is related to SANCTIONS imposed on recalcitrant countries and regimes which refuse to kneel to western sanctions as witnessed by those imposed on Cuban and Pyongyang regimes, Iran and Russia today mainly after the special military operation in Ukraine, criticized Tuesday by Italy’s former PM Conte as damaging Italian businesses; Consequently, BRICS’s expansion will make much less efficient as the new members would not implement future sanctions imposed on Russia for example.

BRICS AT A CROSSROAD

The XV BRICS summit ended in Johannesburg while starts new phase of its history, that of its expansion to other countries inviting Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to join as full-fledged members beginning next year. The New Development Bank (popularly known as the BRICS Bank) has already been joined by new members such as Bangladesh, Egypt, the UAE, and Uruguay. But BRICS expansion will confront numerous challenges to be overcoming as the admission of new countries as full-fledged members will drastically change the group’s dynamics owing to their very different economies and domestic situations and their different ideological patterns. Here one can formulate two hypothesis:(1) dealing with the question of alternative currencies to dollar could be a appropriate solution for the developing countries to free themselves from the Bretton woods intuitions set up in the wake of the WWII used as US tool to impose its worldwide hegemony and this way, the BRICS can play key role in the current move for a multipolar world;(2) however, alternative currencies is one solution to meet the main challenge, the survival of the BRICS in the long term, this is a different story. The BRICKS can be compared with the European Union founded in 1951, starting with the European Coal and Steel Community which was its first step In 1957, the Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community (EEC) and opened a new era of ever closer cooperation in Europe whose history began with a common market between six European countries and ended with common currency in 2000 the Euro and political union established by Lisbon Treaty in 2007 albeit its rejection by the French people in 2005 by 55% of the vote, by the Dutch and the Irish, grouping 28 members, till 2020 now 27 after the withdrawal  of the UK following the BREXIT referendum in June 2016 and definitive separation on January 31, 2020 read more on @elmir1975
